Abstract

This bilingual creative writing piece explores the artistic process and cultural significance behind the creation of "Ki'i o ka Hana" an artwork that examines intergenerational knowledge transmission in ʻōiwi (Native Hawaiian) culture. Written in both ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and English, the text details the evolution of the artwork from initial conceptualization through completion, describing how morning light, circular forms, and thoughtfully chosen colors work together to represent the continuous flow of cultural knowledge between generations. The piece emphasizes the deep interconnectedness of ʻōiwi practices, family bonds, and natural elements, ultimately serving as a meditation on the enduring strength of cultural traditions and their role in community wellbeing.
