Vol. 1 No. 1 (2025): Da Pueo Press, "Aloha ʻĀina"

Da Pueo Press (DPP) is by and for UHWO students, with the mentorship of Humanities faculty and the support of the Institute for Research and Engaged Scholarship and UHWO administration.

Our inaugural issue centers the theme of aloha ʻāina, which is often translated as love for the land, evoking a deep, visceral connection to the Hawaiian homeland. Aloha ʻāina entails living as an integral part of the land and recognizing its interconnectedness with us. Embracing aloha ʻāina means incorporating this understanding into our actions, from land use to community issues.

Aloha ʻāina is seen in the work of 11 featured writers across diversified genres of academic research, creative fiction, creative nonfiction, event reviews, and poetry. Further, this theme is seen in the art of 3 featured artists.

We ask readers to begin your this issue with the "Letter from the Editor" as a starting point, and then work through each piece and artwork featured, and, in conclusion, learn more about who has helped this project be successful in our acknowledgements that wrap up this first issue.
